With the opening music sequence of drum beats, Prabal Gurung making his first fashion showcase in Singapore, quickly brought the audience at the 2014 Audi Fashion Festival straight into the ambiance of the Himalayas mountains. The label's Fall/Winter 2014/2015 collection was a marriage of tribalism and urban chic, inspired by the Nepalese designer's own roots and beginnings - born in Singapore and raised in Kathmandu, starting work in India before finally calling New York City his home.
The opening sequence with the musical introduction interspersed with solemn chanting, saw a heavy dose of outerwear, in layered formats with knit sweaters and scarves, matched with sarong-like skits. A piano solo took over just as the collection moved to casual and evening wear, featuring autumnal colours of deep burgundy, marmalade orange, scarlet red and grey shades, as well as tribal and floral prints on wrap tops, coupled with flamboyant flared skirts or formal fitted trousers.
The finale with the runway soundtrack on a crescendo, saw two signature formal pieces in red and midnight black, accentuated with Swarovski crystals. And with that, the fashion showcase by Prabal Gurung's eponymous label - one of the most promising fashion brands coming out of the American industry - brought the fashion week in Singapore to an official grand opening.
