The Prodigal Flair of Stéphane Rolland Haute Couture

10 September 2011

By Cheryl Tay

Unveiled at the Press Conference of Women's Fashion Week 2011 Singapore as one of the Grand Couturiers to showcase during the 'Haute Couture Week' finale, Stéphane Rolland is a prodigy destined for success and fashion stardom, with his eye-pleasing and jawdropping designs exhibiting flair and flamboyance.

SENATUS looks at the meteoric rise of the Parisian designer.

Stéphane Rolland launched his own couture house in 2007, presenting only haute couture, after having spent 10 years at the helm of the House of Jean-Louis Scherrer.

Another student of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, Rolland’s talent was recognised at the young age of 20 by Balenciaga.

Within his first year of employment there, he was promoted to Creative Director of Balenciaga Menswear.

He left Balenciaga at 24 to start his own company with his own prêt-à-porter collection, which gained instant popularity and was stocked in 80 boutiques and department stores worldwide within its first year.

During this time he also worked in costume design and was nominated for the prestigious Molière awards two years in a row, eventually becoming an official partner of the Cannes Film Festival.

Subsequently Rolland became the artistic manager of Jean-Louis Scherrer and left after 10 years when his vision and strategy no longer coincided with that of the owners.

Thus the House of Stéphane Rolland was born.

His real wish is to unite prêt-à-porter, haute couture, accessories and jewellery lines under the Paris haute couture culture.

For many, Rolland’s style evokes the quintessential Parisian spirit, complete with perfect tailoring. His designs have an unmistakable presence, are architectural in structure and also plain at the same time as he is inspired by modern art, architecture and photography.

He has been hailed as Cheryl Cole’s favourite couturier as she has famously worn three of his dresses on the X Factor live shows and also to receive the show’s National Television Award.

The couturier has also made headlines for dressing A-listers like Rihanna and Beyoncé.
