On the eve of the 115th New York International Auto Show, set to run from 3 to 12 April at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Hell's Kitchen in New York City, McLaren Automotive has teased the motoring world with the unveiling of the 570S Coupé.
The British marque, based in Woking and famed for its racing heritage, describes the model as a "super car designed in the sports car segment" and marks the first time it has offered its pioneering and race-derived technologies in this category.
The new offering in its Sports Series sits underneath the Super Series (650S) and the Ultimate Series (P1) and together these 3 tiers will make an appearance at the trade show this coming weekend.
The new 570S Coupé is a classic sports car with a mid-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive layout and a carbon fibre chassis.
The 3.8-litre V8 twin-turbo M838TE engine produces 562bhp and 600Nm of torque, with 30 percent of its components bespoke to the Sports Series. Power is delivered through a 7-speed SSG transmission and transmitted to the road via Pirelli P-Zero™ Corsa tyres, and this power is brought under control with standard-fit carbon ceramic brakes.
The unique carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis at the heart of the 570S Coupé is incredibly strong and stiff yet weighs less than 80kg, and has been designed to offer optimum levels of protection without inhibiting ingress and egress from the cabin. This lightweight structure, and the use of aluminium body panels, contributes to a dry weight as low as 1,313 kg, almost 150 kg lighter than its closest competitor.
The high power output, combined with the lightweight carbon fibre structure, means the 570S Coupé delivers a class leading power-to-weight ratio of 428bhp per tonne.
The 570S Coupé accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds, 200 km/h in 9.5 seconds, and the top speed is 328 km/h.
Day-to-day usability is one of the key propositions of McLaren's new sports car, and intelligent and ergonomic design within the cabin provides extended stowage space — the most usable space of any McLaren model to date.
It also has its own newly developed suspension system along with 'Normal', 'Sport' and 'Track' handling settings, to manage driving in urban built-up areas to racing on the track.
Comprehensively equipped with a full infotainment system, including an all-new TFT digital instrument cluster that changes configuration according to the selected driving mode. The seven-inch IRIS touchscreen, mounted on a 'floating' centre console, integrates climate control functionality, Bluetooth connectivity and (depending on market) DAB digital or SIRIUS satellite radio.
Priced at US$180,000, the 570S is set to give the Porsche Carrera, Audi R8 and Ferrari California a run for its money.
