It has been a full decade since Jaquet Droz first turned its artistic gaze toward the rich heritage of Japanese arts. Now the Swiss maison revisits this profound theme with an exceptional creation that takes the mask of the Japanese warrior as its central motif. This unique piece is known as the Tourbillon Skelet Sapphire Bushido and represents a respectful yet free interpretation of ancient shapes and colors that required more than 200 hours of work to bring to life.

The dial serves as the face of the watch so it is only natural for a piece inspired by the Archipelago to feature its most famous visage. While masks are often associated with the pageantry of Noh or Kabuki theatre the Bushido mask occupies a special realm where legend meets reality. This visage must embody the code of honor known as the way of the warrior while asserting power and offering spiritual protection. To meet these needs the mask borrows codes from the gods and demons of the Japanese pantheon to create a powerful visual sensation.

The visual impact is immediate as micro-sculpture takes center stage to ensure the mask emerges in three distinct dimensions. A 100 percent sapphire case creates a spectacular illusion that the mask is being worn directly on the wrist. This transparent housing is a tour de force that is manufactured entirely in La Chaux-de-Fonds without the use of screws or inserts. The result is a perfectly clear and unobstructed view that allows the most intricate details of the craftsmanship to be admired from every angle.

Jaquet Droz called upon a team of master craftspeople including engravers and painters to achieve this level of detail. The main surface is hand-painted while the horns are crafted from translucent enamel. In a premiere for the brand the face features a setting of Murano glass beads that accentuate the dominant jade color and the menacing red accents found on the hands. Intaglio engraving on a red gold base underscores the eyes and mouth to ensure that none of the surfaces remain flat.

The mechanical heart of this unique timepiece is a manufacture calibre with a tourbillon positioned at 12 o'clock to balance the barrel at 6 o'clock. A rare treat awaits on the reverse side where the back of the mask itself is hand-painted with sakura cherry blossoms. This floral detail is visible through an openworked red gold oscillating weight and adds a touch of hidden beauty to a watch that embodies the Disruptive Legacy philosophy of the brand.
